Millbrook's Confessionals is the emotional polar opposite of the group's Cathedrals, and that's what sets it apart from the pack. Glorious, and more-than-worthy of its Elliott Smith ambiance.

millbrook's confessionals

More subdued and personal than sister EP Cathedrals, Confessionals finds the team of Daniel Jacob Horine and Steven Moser, collectively known as Millbrook, in a pensive state of Elliott Smith-infused being.

Intimate, introspective, and much less widescreen than Cathedrals, these songs take a one-on-one approach with treatises on sudden loss (the moody, affecting “God Takes Ones We Love the Most”), admiration (the sleepy, pretty “The End of the Day,” which sports some adept acoustic guitar work and quite nifty chord and octave changes, as well as some angelic background vocals), and romantic dedication (the beautiful, classically-styled “I’d Leave It to Love You,” adorned with a lovely string arrangement).

With Confessionals, Horine and Moser prove once again that they are bright lights amongst the crowded stars, with originality and talent to spare. There is a third EP coming, Catacombs, which will tread different road than Cathedrals and this collection, one that will be defined by a dark and electronic core. I can’t wait to hear it.
